In solidarity with Indigenous resistance to the Dakota Access pipeline, organizers with Diablo Rising Tide (DIRT) and friends organized a 150 person rally, march and action through downtown San Francisco today. Exposing Citibank’s lead funding of the Dakota Access pipeline, marchers blocked the intersection in front of one of Citibank’s flagship branches in the Financial District, while DIRT members and allies locked down in the intersection, demanding that Citibank stop providing funding for the construction of the pipeline. Two DIRT members were arrested nearby.

Today’s action was a direct response to the call put out by both the Sacred Stone Camp and Red Warrior Camp in southern North Dakota for solidarity direct actions targeting oil companies and banks profiting from the pipeline.

Both camps have called for escalation in direct actions done in solidarity and particularly for people with privilege to take action and put their bodies on the line.

Members of Rising Tide North America (RTNA) and Diablo Rising Tide have been in direct communication with the Red Warrior and Sacred Stone Camps in southern North Dakota on an almost daily basis. RTNA is supporting those who’ve signed up to host solidarity actions and created and managed the online infrastructure for the actions across the country. Local SF Bay organizing was also done in consultation with Idle No More SF Bay. Lakota activist William Underbaggage, honored us today by speaking at the rally.

Native leaders on the ground in North Dakota have been there since April, and they’ve expressed that they intend to be there through the winter. They’ve been attacked physically, with dogs and mace and many other ways.

We invite everyone to consider this and ask ourselves: “How much more are we willing to do?”

Let’s escalate our actions in risk and scope. Let their sacrifice and courage be our measure for our actions. And let’s do solidarity by organizing more escalated actions and raising resources for the No Dakota Access fight across the prairies and rivers. To join or host solidarity actions go here:

Thanks so much for everyone who came out today and all those who helped make it happen.

See you in the streets.

Love and solidarity,
Diablo Rising Tide
